Reporters Without Borders is an international non-governmental organization that promotes and defends freedom of information and freedom of the press. It was founded in 1985 by Robert Ménard and Rémy Loury to support journalists in danger. The organization has consultative status at the United Nations, UNESCO, the Council of Europe, and the International Organization of the Francophonie. Reporters Without Borders has bureaus in Paris, Washington D.C., Berlin, Brussels, Geneva, Madrid, Rome, Stockholm and Tunis as well as representatives in Abidjan, Bamako, Bangkok, Beirut, Dakar, Hong Kong, London and Moscow. It also maintains offices in Buenos Aires and Mexico City.

The organization works to protect journalists from censorship and violence worldwide by providing financial assistance to endangered journalists; advocating for press freedom through lobbying governments; monitoring media violations; providing legal assistance to persecuted journalists; creating awareness campaigns; organizing protests; producing documentaries; publishing reports on press freedom violations; creating a network of bloggers and citizen journalists; providing training for media professionals; maintaining an emergency hotline for endangered journalists; and awarding prizes to those who have made significant contributions to press freedom.

Reporters Without Borders also produces an annual World Press Freedom Index which ranks countries according to their level of press freedom. The index is based on surveys conducted with media professionals around the world about their experiences with censorship or threats against them. The index is used by governments as a tool to assess their compliance with international standards on press freedom.
