Dana McDonald's name was pulled from over thousands of entries in the Chamber's 29th annual "Win A Truck" raffle at its offices Monday afternoon, ending months of wondering who would be the lucky individual. Amid some raindrops falling on the Chamber of Commerce's parking lot, Cline Elementary School student Julie Williams dug deep into the clear barrel with her right arm and pulled out the slip of paper with McDonald's name on it. "Oh my gosh, I can't believe this. I'm in a state of shock," McDonald said over the phone as a Chamber member put the call on speaker for all of the small gathering to hear once they returned inside. She and Chamber members will now be heading to McRee Ford this week to take care of all the paperwork before she drives away with her unexpected prize of a 2019 Ford Ranger STX. Chamber President and CEO Carol Marcantell said between 3,700 to 3,800 entries were received before the 4 p.m. drawing. McDonald said she bought three $10 tickets, all online. "The community came out and supported us along with our Chamber members. We worked hard to get the word out. We didn't hit budget but we came close. We were kind of worried about two weeks ago," Marcantell said. Had this been a normal year, the drawing would have been held on the Fourth of July. But because the covid-19 pandemic wiped out the city's festivities, both its parade down South Friendswood Drive and fireworks this summer, the Chamber of Commerce decided to extend this year's drawing through Labor Day.ulie Williams "It's a dream maker in a way because for $10 you have...0 Tags 0 Parts 1 Vue

Approximately 615 Pearland ISD students and over 3,000 Alvin ISD students received backpacks to start the new school year through the drive. This is the 16th consecutive year for Operation Backpack, a fundraising drive organized by the Vic Coppinger Family YMCA in Pearland that provides backpacks and school supplies for students in need. "Operation Backpack is the community coming together to ensure that our kids get to school with the supplies they need," said Suzanne Murray, district director for the Y throughout the Pearland and Alvin region. "It's wonderful to see that happen." The YMCA received more than 3,000 requests for backpacks for 2020, and there was a noted increase in Pearland ISD, Murray said. The backpacks come pre-filled with school supplies. "Even though some kids are having school at their home, they still need paper to write on, pencils and markers to use," Murray said. Normally, the Y, in collaboration with partners and sponsors, would designate drop-off point locations. But this year, the project had to go virtual and through July and August, the Y collected money from the community via a "no touch or low touch" online donation drive. "Each year, we are fortunate to receive supplies through YMCA Operation Backpack to provide our students with tools they need for success," Pearland ISD spokesperson Kim Hocott said. "Without this partnership and these donations each year, students would have a difficult time starting the school year on the right...0 Tags 0 Parts 1 Vue
